Gejiu self-supporting Mining and Metallurgy: plans to stop production and maintenance for 30 days

What the Plan Is

According to a Shanghai Metals Market (SMM) report, Gejiu Self-supporting Mining and Metallurgy Co., Ltd. announced a scheduled production suspension and maintenance period of about 30 days, during which certain furnaces and production lines will be taken offline for overhaul.

This maintenance window — typically timed at the end of the calendar year — is aimed at equipment servicing and operational upgrades that cannot be performed during normal production.

 Timing and Scope

The planned shutdown is set to run from mid-November through mid-December (30 days total). During this period, selected furnaces and key processing units will be offline, affecting the facility’s output capacity.

While exact dates may vary year-to-year based on operational needs, the duration reflects a comprehensive maintenance schedule rather than an unplanned outage.

Impact on Production Output

The stoppage is expected to reduce Gejiu’s refined tin output for November and December due to the temporary offline period for major equipment.

Given that Gejiu’s operations form a significant part of Yunnan’s tin refining capacity — and China is a global tin production hub — even short-term shutdowns can influence regional supply and domestic refined tin availability in the market.

 Industry Context

Planned maintenance like this is part of normal smelter operations, especially in metal markets where annual or seasonal overhauls help maintain efficiency and safety. For example, the world’s largest tin producer also recently scheduled extended maintenance at its Gejiu smelter, illustrating that such planned stoppages are routine in the industry.
