Critical Metals Corp Confirms Metallurgical Test Work Results at Tanbreez Support Refinery JV in Romania
Metallurgical Test Work Successfully Replicated
Critical Metals Corp announced that its 2025 metallurgical test work at the Tanbreez project successfully replicated earlier laboratory results from 2016, confirming the viability of the core process flow sheet. Independent consultant Professor Tony Tang reviewed and validated the work, showing that rare-earth minerals like eudialyte, arfvedsonite and feldspar can be separated into high-grade concentrates using a dry magnetic separation process.
New Magnetic Technology Improves Results
In addition to replication, the 2025 program integrated advanced high-intensity magnetic separation technology (>12,000 gauss). This produced an even cleaner eudialyte concentrate and a valuable secondary rare earth concentrate that earlier tech couldn’t recover. The updated flowsheet and improvements are being folded into final engineering and economic models for the project.
Pilot Plant Milestone on the Horizon
Critical Metals has acquired a 300–500 kg/hour Proof-of-Concept Pilot Plant for roughly $2 million, with commissioning expected in Q2 2026. This pilot facility will generate real-world performance data at ~1:200 scale and supply about 10-tonne weekly batches of concentrate for potential offtake partners starting mid-2026. The pilot plant will help refine final commercial designs and training ahead of full-scale operations.
Strategic Romanian Refinery Joint Venture
The validated test results strengthen the foundation for the 50:50 joint venture between Critical Metals and Romania’s Nuclearelectrica to build a rare earth refinery near Brașov, Romania. This refinery is planned to accept Tanbreez concentrate and produce high-purity rare earth salts and metals (targeting 99.99%–99.9995% purity), including advanced materials like permanent magnets for aerospace, defense, and NATO/EU supply chains.
Geopolitical & Supply Chain Context
Critical Metals frames the results and JV as part of an integrated Western-aligned mine-to-metals rare earth supply chain, reducing dependence on non-Western sources. The Romanian refinery is positioned to serve strategic industries in Europe and allied regions, supporting secure supply of critical materials essential to electrification, national security, and advanced manufacturing.
